Holm Football Club

A Brief History

The history of football in Holm dates back to World War 1 when soldiers based at the Holm Breckan Battery formed a team. This again happened in WW2 with men based at Rockworks who continued their stay with a Holm league team until 1951. However the first Parish Cup tournament began in 1929, when Holm beat Deerness 3-2 in the first ever Parish Cup Final. Another Holm league team formed in the early 1980s, winning the Orkney County 'B' League and Oxy Cup in 1984, but had no success in the Parish Cup. The return of a league team in 2004 saw Holm win the 'B' league and reaching the final of the Oxy Cup but losing out to Rendall. The parish team managed to reach the Parish Cup final but only to lose to St Ola after extra time. A repeat scenario happened during the Inter County Parish match with Shetland side Delting, losing 3-1 after extra time.

Following several successful years in the B League, Holm were promoted to the A League, after a good year in 2008.  Since then, they have had mixed results, however have managed to remain in the A League, despite 'A' League team, St Andrews, being demoted in Holm's first year.

This year has seen Holm back to form in the Parish Cup, beating both South Ronaldsay and Evie, to secure their place in the Semi Final.  Hopefully, Holm can match the success of 2003 / 2004 and make it into the final.
